Not a Keeper! Thibaut Courtois Misses Penalty in Chelsea-Arsenal Shoot-Out

In a bizarre move, Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois took a penalty in the FA Community Shield shoot-out with Arsenal – and missed!

The Belgian keeper blasted the ball over the bar. Misses by Courtois and £55m striker Alvaro Morata meant Arsenal took the first trophy of the season.

The two sides were tied 1-1 at full-time and that was when the weirdness began!

Central defender, Gary Cahill, was a strange choice to go first. After he scored and two Arsenal players, Theo Walcott and Nacho Monreal, converted successive kicks, Chelsea imploded.

Courtois took Chelsea’s second kick and ballooned it over.

(It’s not like he can’t do it…)

Then centre forward Alvaro Morata drag the first meaningful goal attempt of his Chelsea career miserably wide.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Olivier Giroud stepped up to score for Arsenal and the match was won.

Many in the crowd were likely confused by the penalties.

The ABBA system is new and will take some getting used to. It works like a tennis tie-break. One shot to team A, followed by two for team B, two for A and so on. The idea is to prevent the team going second having to deal with the pressure of always trailing.
